Darrel Hurst
Darrel grew
up on an apple farm in the mountains of Colorado. With one older brother (the late Willard
Hurst), and three sisters Frances, Arlene, and Gladys. He was always very creative
about making things around the farm. When he was 13 years old his family moved to
Sebastopol, California.
Darrel and Gladys used to ride the bus home from Analy High School every day, this is how
he met his wife Margie. By graduation time they were engaged. They were married in
August of 1942. In October of the same year they purchased 40 acres. At that time
the War had been going on since the previous year. One evening, after they had viewed a
movie concerning the war in the South Pacific, Darrel was determined he was going to
go. Being in agriculture he had an exemption, however he joined the Marine Corp in
Feb., 1943. It was two years before he returned to his wife and 17 month old son, Glenn.
For 55 years Darrel had been an apple farmer and a loving family man. He and Margie raised
13 children (8 adopted) as well as apple trees. He loved taking his children to work with
him as soon as they were out of diapers.
He loved his wife and family very much but there was one love that transcended all.
At the age of 28, he and his wife asked the Lord to come into their hearts. In his
declining days when he could not move outside of home, he spent his time praying for
everyone on his long long prayer list. On January 2, 1998 Darrel went to be with the Lord
at age 74.
He was a great man to all those who ever met him. We, his family dedicate this page
in honor of him, for Twin Hill Ranch would not exist if it weren't for the hard work he
and his family have endured for the last 55 years...
